Summary of Log: Tad and Blair begin their search of the missing students.
Rating: PG

Again an Imperius’d Alexis was finding himself on irrevocable Death Eater business whenever he was sent to venture around Hogsmeade. Today, he was here to deliver the dropout letters of the two newest students they had taken. And as usual, Regulus was running late. But of course, Alexis was oblivious to any of this, or how long he was actually made to stand outside in the cold. An Imperius’d mind work in strange and fascinating ways, concentrating solely on the task at hand and ignoring all other obstacles. Of course, whenever they were presented with one that couldn’t be dismissed, it was their obligated duty to eliminate said blockade and continue on with the mission.

The only few times he was ever taken off the unforgivable was when he was in the lair, under strict Death Eater supervision. He had spent literally hours, during those nights where he had his conscious to himself, trying to figure out what he had done that very day, only to find his mind in a blank. And no matter how hard he tried, he couldn’t remember nor was he able to resist the curse when it was placed upon him the following morning.

Of course, his current state of mind was free of any worry as he stood stiffly on an empty street corner waiting for the other Death Eater to show up. His expressionless eyes stared out at the opposite side of the street, never straying nor blinking in all the time he had been standing there.

"If Blake was last seen here the there's a chance that he's got business in Hogsmeade, or he's coming back for someone else today. If we can catch him there's a chance we can get the truth out of him," Tad was saying quietly to Blair as they headed down the empty street. If he was honest, despite his calm demeanor, he was going crazy inside. He was worried sick about Blake, Abby and Lanisa, now that he had what he saw as solid proof that they were all in danger and that Blake and Abby hadn't just run away on a stupid whim. He didn't care much for Jessica Berenices, or even his cousin Liae, but Blair did, apparently. He didn't know how anyone put up with his stupid ponce of a cousin to be honest. But that wasn't the issue.

And besides all that he was furious at Alexis. Alexis had promised him that nothing was wrong, that Jessica was with him and that he hadn't seen or heard from Blake or Abby. Clearly he'd been lying out of his ass and Tad was willing to bed that he knew a lot more than he was letting on.

"Wait..." he said suddenly, stopping when he noticed the man himself standing further down the street. He paused and looked from Alexis to Blair. "Wait here." He made his way down the street to where Alexis was standing and apparently hadn't noticed him, not even caring whether Blair was following him or not. He grabbed Alexis by the shoulders and shoved him into the alleyway behind them, away from the view from shop windows.

"The hell's going on, Alexis?!" he demanded, a threatening note in his voice that was never usually there but had clearly been learned somewhere. "I know you've been lying to me in your letters so don't you dare tell me nothing's wrong!"

Blair looked up at Tad as the two walked down the street. “Yes and if your friend is still lurking in Hogsmeade, mark my words, he’ll be squealing on where my boyfriend currently is,” she announced fiercely, absolutely determined to find Liae. She couldn’t even begin to process the horrendous things her boyfriend might have already been subjected to. The Death Eaters were scary, dangerous and violent. They had done awful things in the past without a hint of remorse for whoever they victimized, whether they were man, woman or child.

She stopped short when Tad ordered her to, but followed him slowly when he suddenly took off again, quickening her pace to a run when she saw him grab some guy from the street and literally shove him into the nearest alleyway.

Appearing at the entranceway, she looked from Tad to Alexis, and back at her classmate again. “Be careful Tad,” she warned him, pulling out her wand nonetheless just in case the situation suddenly got out of hand. She had been friends with Alexis Lind in the past, and was quite aware of the fact that he was both adequately prepared to defend himself and quite familiar with dark magic.

Alexis’ mind took a bit of a plunder when it suddenly registered that its body was being yanked and forced against a wall and now being confronted by a very angry student. He lowered his remorseless eyes onto Tad and stared at him in sequenced confusion. “Thadeus Jay,” he said aloud, although it sounded more like he was confirming this to himself rather than saying it to anyone in particular. “I didn’t expect to see you here, least of all on a school day… shouldn’t you be doing revision for your NEWTs right now?”

He stared indifferently at his brother for an elapsing moment, completely ignoring Blair’s presence altogether. “I don’t know what you’re talking about,” he replied, all trace of emotion omitted from his voice. “I know I may have been a little brief in my letters what with my busy schedule, but I never lied to you. Quite frankly, I find that to be a little hurtful, especially after everything we’ve been through.”

He paused to pull his wand from his pocket. “Now I advise you to kindly step back,” he continued, staring down at Tad apathetically. “Before you make me do something I’ll surely regret.”

Tad ignored Blair's warning, partly out of impatience to get answers from Alexis and partly because he already had Blair's voice on auto-ignore from the last few months and it was kind of hard to get out of that. He was fairly sure he was aware of what Alexis was capable of and he didn't really care a the moment. He just wanted to find out what the hell was going on, and he didn't really care how messy it would get before he finally found the answer.

"Well, I should, but you know, I've been a little worried about some people lately. They've just vanished off the face of the earth. Don't suppose you know where they are, do you?" He stepped back from Alexis even so, but made sure he was standing between Alexis himself and the entrance to the alleyway, still glaring at him with the air of someone much bigger than Alexis and therefore confident that he'd be able to restrain the man if need be. He had to admit he didn't feel that way so much, though.

"Don't think I've forgotten what you said back in September," he went on accusingly. "You know where those missing students are. I'm not going to let you leave until you tell me where the hell they're being kept."

Blair kept a watchful eye on Alexis as the two boys exchanged confronting words. She didn’t like that he had his wand out, nor that he was about a good head taller than Tad himself. If anything, she was putting her money with Alexis on this one – he clearly had the upper hand here, despite Tad’s best efforts to throttle his rage at the other man. “Come on Alexis, tell us where they are,” she said, voicing her thoughts into the argument as well. “They have Liae of all people, surely you can tell us where they’ve taken them before those ingrates do something horrendous to my boyfriend.”

She didn’t appear at all pleased when Alexis blatantly ignored her and continued to focus all of his attention on Tad. Now she obviously knew that the Head Boy was the one throwing in all the punches here, but surely Alexis could spare ten seconds to actually look at her, either out of politeness or for the sheer fact that she was a woman. And knowing Alexis, she knew the latter darn well meant something on a regular basis! But was this a regular basis?

She studied her former boyfriend meticulously, taking in his eerily cautious movements, his calculated speech, and glazed-over eyes… “Tad!! Wait!” she cried, taking a few steps towards them. “There’s something wrong with him!”

Alexis showed no sign of remorse or compassion as Tad spoke, as if the two were merely conversing about something mundane like financial planning rather than vigorously discussing the mysterious disappearances of numerous students at school. He completely ignored Blair’s address altogether, as his eyes remained fixated on his brother. He took a step forward, and another, and another one after that until he was standing just a few feet away from the Head Boy.

“Curiosity is at times a dangerous habit to uphold Tad,” he explained mechanically. “Your friend Jack Tracey should know of this. He was determined to find his button that one time when I happened to cross him in a corridor, and well, you should know the rest of that little story Thadeus, seeing as how it ended with your friend becoming one of Omen’s victims. And quite recently actually, another friend of yours, Blake Parker, witnessed something he really shouldn’t have, and had he listened when I told him to leave, then I wouldn’t have had to erase his memory afterwards.”

He brandished his wand in Tad’s direction. “And I’m afraid I’m going to have to do the same here,” he concluded. “You understand right? I warned you countless times to drop the matter, but you wouldn’t listen to me.”

Tad glanced back at Blair when she pointed out that something was wrong with Alexis, and when he turned back to his brother he sort of started to wonder if she was right. No part of this conversation matched up to Alexis' personality whatsoever.

He was even more confused when Alexis brought up the story of Jack and the missing button. He had heard that Alexis had once admitted to being the person who'd attacked Jack and the one who had framed Tad himself as a double agent, but he'd thought that Alexis at least regretted his actions and he thought that Alexis would never bring Omen's reign of fear up in front of him even if he didn't. His hand twitched at his side and for a split second he felt himself torn between renewed anger at Alexis for his involvement with Omen and guilt that Tad still associated with him after what he'd done to everyone last year.

Then there was Blake... Alexis said he'd erased his memory recently. How far had he gone? How much of his friend's memory had Alexis wiped? And a new fear: Alexis was going to do the same now. They were running out of people on their side. If Alexis managed to destroy their memory now, only Magnolia Rowley would be left and she didn't have nearly enough information on her own to help anyone-

Realising how quickly he'd have to act to beat Alexis to the punch and still fuming with the man, he drew his wand and cast the first spell that popped into his head.

Blair gaped at Alexis in monumental shock as he was, in her opinion, displaying a purposeful taunt against Tad. There was something definitely wrong with him. She knew Alexis, and regardless of his attraction to drama, the words spewing from his mouth were not things she had ever expected to hear from her ex. She suddenly felt very guarded when he took an advance towards the two of them and announced his intentions of erasing both their memories clean. She was definitely not going to forget about Liae or have someone tamper with her mind for that matter. She raised her wand in an attempt to stun their former schoolmate, but Tad beat her to the punch first.

“TAD!” she screamed, when the hem of Alexis’ clothes suddenly ignited in wild fire. The initial shock gripped her to a halt, as she watched her former boyfriend perform what looked like a very animated dance. Finally though, she raised her wand and uttered the same spell that Tad had used, although it would work properly for her, “Aguamenti!”

“Are you out of your mind?!” she snapped, glaring at Tad in a full-frontal rage attack. “You could have killed our only lead!”

It took several silent seconds for Alexis to realize he was on fire, as the effects of the Imperius wore off and the pain from the flames sunk in. He stared down momentarily at himself, a stranger in his own body, until the real Alexis realized what was going on. “THE HELL?!” he cried, cursing colorfully as he tried to extinguish his clothes, completely forgetting that he had his wand already out in his hand. He smack his arm against the brick wall, stomped his feet against the ground, desperately trying to put himself out. Relief came when he suddenly felt himself being hosed down, and the fire subsided, leaving behind soot black imprints all over his suit.

Drops of water leaked from his hair and trailed down his chin as he finally looked up at Tad, completely drenched from head to toe. He didn’t know where to begin, feeling so disorientated. Where was he? Why were Tad and Blair in front of him? And most importantly, why had he been on fire just moments before? He ran a hand through his hair and shook, to the best of his abilities, the rest of the water from it.

“…What’s going on?” he asked finally, his voice still a little shaky from the aftershock of the event. Waking up to the fact that you are burning up alive was just about enough to freak anyone out.

"Sorry, I just said the first thing that came into my head, it was that or -" He paused when Blair rectified the problem, watching Alexis warily as he continued. "- Or forget our only lead... anyway."

He stared at Alexis when he realised that somehow, without realising it, they'd actually achieved a positive result through that last moment of ridiculousness. "W-well, clearly I just set you on fire..." Tad began tentatively. "And Blair put you out. You mean to tell me you don't actually realise what just happened...?

He fell silent for a moment when he realised that Alexis probably didn't, considering what he'd learned over the last while about Alexis' situation. "Well, it was an ugly suit anyway. Alexis, you need to tell us where the missing students are!" he pressed on eagerly, before something else could set them back. "Five are gone now. We need to fix this before anyone else gets involved!"

Blair shot Tad a disapproving look. “Perhaps more civil arrangements could have been taken into accordance, but I shall let it slide this time,” she replied briskly, turning to face Alexis with a hand on her hip. That hip prop sort of became a trademark of Blair’s over the years, seeing as how she only tended to use it when she meant serious business. She was sure that both Alexis and Liae were well acquainted with it.

“Yes so far they’ve taken that slut Parker, Tad’s little sister, Jessica, Tad’s girlfriend, and my darling Liae,” she added, tossing her hair back with great importance. “So you understand our necessity to seek out where they are right? I mean, more than half of Tad’s family has gone missing, ironically enough, and also your own girlfriend!”

She sighed, tapping her foot impatiently against the ground. “You’re our only lead Alexis,” she said finally.

Alexis took a second to see what it was he was wearing… a boring grey suit? What was he… some sort of tax auditor? “You’re right, this is hideous,” he remarked, with a wrinkled look of disgust evident on his face. “Well I shall have to thank you for burning the evil out of it… sort of.” He drew his attention away from his appearance however when Tad pressed on about the missing students. Of course, that’s why Blair and Tad were here confronting him, and probably the reason why he had been summoned here in the first place. He could only assume the latter, seeing as how he didn’t have the faintest of ideas what the Death Eaters coerced him into doing while he was under the effects of the Imperius.

“Yes, I know who’s been taken,” he replied to Blair, his eyes lingering on her momentarily before he turned his attention back onto his brother. He sort of felt that even though he had had obviously no control over the situation, he still owed him sort of apology, or at least a valid explanation. After all, he had warned Tad at the start of the year and had since revealed no other updates to him. Perhaps he had, but even then, he wasn’t sure what he had written or told Tad. It was hard for him to think clearly most of time when he had someone else invading in on his conscious throughout most of the hours in a day.

“I’m not sure what I’ve said to you or haven’t said, but you have to believe me when I tell you that I’ve been a prisoner within myself for months,” he explained hastily. “Apparently the Death Eaters weren’t so keen on trusting me the second time around after, I um- tried to do myself in that one time at office. Anyway, I can’t even remember a day at work since then because I’ve been running to and from the office under the Imperius. I’m not even sure whom I’ve spoken to or what I’ve done… the only memories I can recall are the ones within the lair, where they’re keeping your friends, because that’s the only time they allow me some sort of liberty.”

He paused to take a breath, the lines on his forehead increasing as he frown, trying to come up with some sort of elaborate plan. “They’ve got them locked up in the basement of a house in Hazel Brooks, it’s a town a couple of miles away from here. But I must warn you that you two can’t simply waltz in there like that. They’ll kill you both… they’ve got a lot of Death Eaters working in on this scheme and they’re not ready to be apprehended by two students.”

Tad felt an odd inner twitch when Blair mentioned that, yes, a lot of the people who'd vanished were connected with him... he really was jinxed or something. Or maybe he just hung out with unlucky people. Or maybe they were all unlucky and their ill fate was what drew them together. Hadn't Blake, Lanisa and Jack first met when Jack walked into a tree? An -

He was a little nervous now that someone was going to overhear them, but as he glanced quickly around, he could see nobody there.

"So that's why you did it. Nobody understood it, Alexis. You were making pretty good and everyone just figured... it was the job pressure, I guess." He of all people should have guessed better than that.

"And you'll have to tell us how to get in," he went on briskly, trying not to linger on that last thought for too long. "I understand you can't come with us because then you'd be pretty strongly implicated as our source and they'd kill you. But if you can tell us enough to get us through to the basement, we might be able to get everyone out without too much damage."
Dec. 4th, 2008 07:28 pm (UTC)
Blair gaped at Alexis in genuine shock as he explained what had actually become of him over the past couple of months. Some of the things he said mirrored a few of the claims Tad had already tried making to her. However, they seemed to have a more profound affect on her the second time around probably because this time, she was actually believing what she was being told. “Oh Alexis I had no idea…” she began, moving towards him in an attempt to give her former boyfriend a hug, but deciding against it at the last minute when she realized that the soot-covered suit would leave wretched imprints on her clothes. Instead, she patted him lightly on the shoulder.

Blair shot Tad a quizzical look when he informed Alexis that he would not be implicated in their plan to save the others. “Are you stupid or just deaf? Didn’t you just hear him…?! They can’t be apprehended by two students, meaning we need his help!” she snapped, glaring at the Head Boy with a look that read that she thought he was a complete idiot. She turned to address Alexis. “You’ll help us won’t you? We obviously need an inside man on the job, and you’re going to do just that.”
Dec. 4th, 2008 08:05 pm (UTC)
Alexis slowly shook his head, responding to Tad. “No, it wasn’t the job pressure, I had been trying to get rid of this,” he began, slowly pulling up the left sleeve of his jacket to reveal his mutilated forearm. The skin where third degree burns had left their imprints was slightly darker than the rest, and wrinkled as though someone had literally tried to hack that bit of skin to pieces then tried to stretch what was left of it over the wound. And although his gnarled forearm was grotesque and revolting in every way, a reminder of the time he had once tried to end his life, the dark mark was still branded into his arm, bold and clear as the day it had been tattooed in.

He regarded Blair carefully, choosing to remain unresponsive towards her authoritarian way around things. He knew his former girlfriend all too well anyway and her approach to life was anything less than dominating. It was simply the Blair Waldorf way. “No she’s right, I need to help you two get in,” he explained hastily. “And I want to help you two Tad. You’ll need me to get in and to get everyone out as well… I owe you that much anyway.”

Lowering his voice, he began to whisper instructions to the two on how exactly they were going to get the others out of there alive.
